Bringing new staff in is always a good idea to keep things fresh and fill out the missing areas of your company’s roster, but it’s not a good idea to rely exclusively on new blood to improve things. You already have a group of people that are doing good work for you, but there are ways to make their work even better. Here are a few of the things you can do to keep the productivity up, or even improve on it.

Lead By Example

No one enjoys being managed in such a way as it appears the people in charge simply issue orders and disappear for the rest of the day. One of the key elements of fostering a strong work ethic in the workplace is through inspiring leadership.

If you lead with presence, interacting with employees on a regular basis and being much more hands on with how the work is done, not only are you showing both new and old employees how work is supposed to be done, you foster greater opportunities to strengthen professional relationships.

Promote From Your Existing Circle

Sometimes the answer to filling a new position in the company doesn’t have to mean finding a new person to fill it. Often there may be someone within the company that is perfectly qualified or shows great promise at handling a position in the company if given the opportunity.

Promoting people within the company also gives existing employees much more incentive to show what they’re capable of and maximize their potential. When people know there are real rewards for working hard and giving their best to the company, morale and motivation remain high, and consequently results do too.

Use Different Skills

While employees have been hired primarily to do one particular job, that doesn’t mean that this is the only thing they can do. In many cases, employees can make many useful contributions in other areas of the company and you may not be aware of it.

Try to discover what else your employees can do during your assessments. You may discover that a particular staff member is also gifted with technology can provide valuable tech support that you may have otherwise needed to call on outside help for. If you find your employees are capable of more than you originally thought, don’t squander this resource and, perhaps more importantly, don’t take it for granted and use it without appropriate compensation.
